Obituary

Reverend Stanley Paul Hartung 1924-2019.

 

The Reverend Stanley Paul Hartung, of Surfside Beach, S.C., formerly of Loyalsock Township, PA, died on October 31, 2019.

 

He was born November 15, 1924, in Adams Township, Butler County, PA, the son of Clarence & Mamie M. (Miller) Hartung.

 

Rev. Hartung graduated from Pittsburgh Xenia Theological Seminary of the United Presbyterian Church of N.A. (now Pittsburgh Theological Seminary), in 1952, and from Westminster College, New Wilmington, PA, in 1949. He did postgraduate work at Pittsburgh University and also Gettysburg Theological Seminary.

 

He married Lois Lorene Eves of Seward, PA on June 3, 1950, and began his ministry at Mexico/Tuscarora Churches in Juniata County, in 1952, where he was ordained by Big Spring Presbytery. He served as Assistant Pastor of Brookline Boulevard United Presbyterian Church, Pittsburgh, PA 1954-1957; Clinton United Presbyterian Church, Allegheny County 1957-1970 and Northway Presbyterian Church of Williamsport, PA 1970-1989, where he retired as Pastor Emeritus. He supplied churches without pastors in Northumberland Presbytery after retirement.

 

He was a World War II veteran, serving in Africa, Italy, the Philippines and Japan. He was a Sargent in the 85th Signal Co., 85th Inf. Division, in Italy, from June 1944 to July 1945 with campaign stars for Rome/ Arno; Apennines; and Po Valley Campaigns. He served in the 62nd Signal Battalion July 1945-January 1946, in Japan.

 

He served as Chairman of the Department of Adm., Board of National Missions of Pittsburgh Presbytery; Chairman of I & S Committee for eight years, Chairman of the Board of Trustees; Chairman of Auditing committee of Northumberland Presbytery. He was a member of Yokefellow Prison Ministry for 36 years and member of its Regional Board of Directors and Chairman of the Local Council for many years. He was President of AARP, Williamsport Chapter #3452 for four years and on the board for many years.

He enjoyed traveling, camping, canoeing and swimming with his family.

 

 He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Lois Lorene Hartung and by three sisters, Mrs. Viola Kozakovsky, Mrs. Edna Stenzel and Mrs. Ruth Hayes.

 

He is survived by a son, Ronald Lee (Susan) Hartung, of New Columbia, PA., three daughters, Diane Lynn (Michael) Guthrie, of Surfside Beach, SC, Barbara Ann (Terry) Isenberg of Surfside Beach, SC, and Elaine Marie (Thomas) Heeter of Canonsburg, PA, seven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren as well as by two sisters, Mildred Drescher of Zelienople, Pa. and Rachael Hall of Mount Lebanon, Pa.

 

The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2019 at the Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St. Montoursville with the Rev. David C. Smith officiating.  Interment will follow in Twin Hills Memorial Park with military honors accorded by the Korean War Veterans of Lycoming Co.  A viewing for friends and family will be held Wednesday morning from 10 – 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.  www.spitlerfuneralhome.com
