June 10, 1945 ~ September 19, 2021 (age 76)

Obituary

David Lee Koppenhaver, 76, passed away September 19, 2021 at UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport surrounded by his family.

Born June 10, 1945 in Hershey, Pennsylvania, David was the son of the late William E. and Ella A. (Hartman) Koppenhaver.

Known as Pappy by his grandchildren, he was renowned for his acerbic wit, genuine nature, and simple tenderness.

Throughout a successful career in sales spanning five decades, David excelled due to his extroverted manner as he thoroughly enjoyed the social aspects of the job.

David was an avid sportsman whose hobbies included fishing, hunting, and sports.  At Potash Lodge, where he spent many years at his beloved cabin, he proudly bagged wild game varying from deer, boar, squirrel, rabbit, and turkey.

Sports were an important part of David’s life. In addition to excelling as a golfer in a professional circuit, he also played hockey, baseball, and football.  As a father and grandfather, he coached youth football and baseball teams in Hershey and Montoursville.

Family and friends could always rely on David for some genuine Pennsylvania Dutch cooking—no one ever went hungry while he was around!  From traditional pork and sauerkraut to freshly caught trout, he could cook, grill and sauté anything to perfection. His special “four legged friends” especially enjoyed the leftovers and scraps that he so generously shared. He dearly loved all the animals and cared for many throughout his life.

David’s family always meant the world to him, which he proudly supported, varying from education, the arts, athletic, and career accomplishments.  David is survived by his wife, Carol M. (Hostovich) Koppenhaver who he married in 1992 in Williamsport, PA; eight children, David, Dean, Shane, Lee, Sarah, William Sr., Olivia, and Christina Koppenhaver; eleven grandchildren, Derrik, Ethan, Leah, Will Jr., Athena, Holden, Ruby, Genna, Persephone, Elias, and Nemmy; and his beloved dogs, Roscoe and Millie.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his sister, Ella (Koppenhaver) Miller, and four brothers, Daniel, Kenneth, Richard, and William (Donald) Koppenhaver.

A funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 25 at Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad Street, Montoursville with Pastor Eric Hartshaw officiating.  Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
