Elizabeth Harrison Maule - Obituary

Elizabeth Harrison Maule, age 100, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2021 at Embassy of Loyalsock in Montoursville, PA. A private graveside service is planned for immediate family, assisted by Pastor Dave Smith of Montoursville Presbyterian Church.  A public memorial service will follow this summer.

Elizabeth was born at home on Curtin St, South Williamsport, to Charlotte and Harry Harrison. She attended South Williamsport schools, graduating in 1939. She graduated from Dickinson Jr. College (Lycoming College) in 1941 and from Lock Haven State Teachers College in 1943.

Elizabeth met William Maule when they were in college. Bill joined the army his senior year and graduated early to serve in World War II. Bill and Elizabeth were married June 27, 1943 and celebrated 70 years of marriage in 2013. Bill passed away on November 2, 2013.

During World War II, Elizabeth substitute taught in many of the local schools until she gave birth to Elizabeth Ann in 1947, William L. Maule Jr. in 1949, and James Harrison Maule in 1952. She went back to teaching in Montoursville schools eight years later.  Elizabeth taught 4th grade at Montour Elementary for many years. She studied library science toward an advanced degree and established all the elementary libraries in the district. She delivered books and read to students in Montoursville’s one-room schools in the country. When McCall Middle School was built, she designed and established its library.

She retired in 1981 and missed her library and her students every day since. She was a devoted “journal buddy” at Cochran Elementary in her retirement. Elizabeth was a member of the Retired Teachers of Lycoming County, the Montoursville Garden Club, and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Elizabeth was a lifelong election poll worker, and active in local politics.

Elizabeth was the matriarch and joy of her family, and a friend and inspiration to many.  She is survived by her three children and their spouses: Elizabeth Ann (Paul James) Gleason, William L., Jr. (Patty) Maule, and James H. (Donna) Maule. She was beloved also by her seven grandchildren, and her many great grandchildren: Kristie Maule and her daughter Savanna Maule; William L. Maule III (Emily) and their children, William L. IV “Liam”, Lydia, Ivan and Ethan; Cara Maule Kranz and her children Anthony, Anya, and Aspen; Annie Maule Wolf (Brian Steppe) and her children Madeline, Gracie and Nathan; Codey Kaiser; Matt Alexander and his sons Dawson and DJ; and Ashley Sarver (Drew Krag). Elizabeth treasured her four nephews David, Tom, Donald, and Keith Dresner, her nephew Robert Kane, nieces Becky Kane Earnest, Sally Kane Cochrane, Jamie Kane Cunnard, and Kathy Kane.

Elizabeth is predeceased by an infant son; her parents; and in-laws, James and Sara Maule; and niece Cora Kane Jordan. Elizabeth’s younger sister, Barbara Harrison Dresner, was her confidant and loving friend; Barbara lived to age 95 and passed on November 9, 2020.

Friends, former students, and colleagues –– and fellow book lovers –– may honor Elizabeth Maule by donating in her name to the Konkle Library, where she volunteered for many years: by mail to 384 Broad St., Montoursville, PA 17754; by phone to 570-368-1840; or online at www.konklelibrary.org. Elizabeth read thousands of books in her lifetime and in retirement, and kept notes on index cards to ensure she didn’t waste time reading a book twice. “Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.” – Plato
