Richard Matthew Cox, formerly of Montoursville, passed away peacefully at Heritage Springs Memory Care on February 26, 2020 with family at his bedside. He was born in Reading, Pennsylvania on March 7, 1935 to Helen L. Thompson and Richard C. Cox.
He was a 1953 Graduate of Altoona High School where he was an outstanding sprinter and hurdler. He ran the second leg of the 880 yard relay team which won the state championship. He attended the University of Pittsburgh where he was an accomplished varsity track athlete. He was subsequently employed by Boeing in Seattle, Washington as a production planner and computer technician. He earned a BA in English from the University of Washington in 1967. Upon graduation, he moved his family to Montoursville, PA and taught English at Williamsport High School where he was also a very successful head coach for the men’s track team. He had a great love of learning and went on to obtain his Masters in School Psychology from Bucknell University in 1975. He held the position of guidance counselor at Stevens Jr. High and Curtin Middle School in Williamsport, retiring close to 30 years with the school district.
Richard was a loving husband, father, Pap-Pap, brother, friend, and neighbor. He had many hobbies which included reading, wood working, exercising, gardening, and watching Penn State football. He also volunteered his time assisting aspiring track athletes. He loved engaging with others and he had a wonderful sense of humor which endeared him to many. We will miss that twinkle always in those bright blue eyes.
He is survived by his children, Kathleen (Randall) Moser of Montoursville, Matthew (Amanda) Cox of Virginia Beach, VA, James (Susan) Cox, of Easton, NY, and Robert (Diana) Cox, of Jersey Shore; grandchildren, Jonathan Knorr, Sarah Knorr (Ty Butler), Emily Cox, Cameron Cox, Randall (Alexis) Moser, Jr., and Scott (Rosalina) Moser; and three great grandchildren, Randy Larue, Benjamin, and Alana. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Ann (James) Tedeschi, Samuel (Connie) Cox, William (Rosemary) Cox, Cynthia (Larry) Owens, and Kathleen (William) Matheus. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Patricia A. (Keller) Cox, and his sister, Judith Cadle.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm Saturday, March 14, at the Spitler Funeral Home, 733 Broad St., Montoursville with the Rev. Susan Vincent Cox officiating. Friends and family will be received from 1:30 – 2:30 pm before the service at the funeral home. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Montoursville Cemetery.
