Robert M. Norton

June 30, 1936 ~ April 3, 2022 (age 85)


Robert M. “Bob” Norton, 85 of Eldred Twp., PA, formerly of Hillsgrove and Laporte, PA, died April 3, 2022, at Valley View Nursing Center, Montoursville. 

Born June 30, 1936, in Williamsport, PA, Bob was the son of Gertrude Steele Norton and stepson of Herbert Y. Norton. He was raised on a farm in Hillsgrove Township, Sullivan County, PA.

Bob graduated from Loyalsock Joint H.S. in Estella in 1955. While in High School he was also a varsity basketball player during his junior and senior years. He was a BSCAA (Bradford Sullivan County Athletic Association) all-star his senior year. Bob also joined the Marine Reserves while a senior and was a member for 2.5 years. Upon graduation he worked for McCarty Driscoll Lumber Company. After working for the lumber company, he attended Houghton College for one semester. He then transferred to Lock Haven State Teachers College. While at Lock Haven he played varsity soccer for 2 years. He was on the swim team for 3 years. He graduated from Lock Haven in 1961. While a student at Lock Haven he met and became engaged to his future wife, Carolyn Abernatha. They married July 14, 1961. He started his teaching and coaching career in the fall of 1961 at Sullivan Highland High School, Sonestown, PA. Upon the consolidation of the Sullivan County Schools in 1963, he continued his teaching and coaching career. He got his Master of Education from State University of New York at Cortland. While at Sonestown he coached baseball, basketball, and track and field. Two students in track and field went to states. While at SCHS in Laporte, he coached boys’ and girls’ basketball, girls’ volleyball, and track and field. He started the soccer program. The 65-66 boys’ basketball team went undefeated in the regular season thus winning the NTL East Championship. He also had two athletes’ from SCHS in the regular season qualify for states. One in the javelin and the other in the long jump. In the 10 years he coached soccer, 3 SCHS teams won league championships. In his 34 years of coaching, he coached 158 teams.

Bob served as the Laporte Borough Treasurer. He was a United Methodist Lay Speaker for 3 years. After moving to Hillsgrove he was elected Township Supervisor. He also was a member of the Hillsgrove Cemetery Association. He was a long-time member of the Eagles Mere Country Club, where he had one witnessed hole in one and another unwitnessed. After moving to the Montoursville area, he was a member of the Warrensville Lions Club. The Pine Street United Methodist Church was his last church home.

Bob is survived by his son, Jeffrey of Lock Haven, PA; his daughter, Jennifer of Montoursville; and son, John of Mississippi, two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, A. James Norton of New Jersey; a sister, Sandra Steele of New York; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife; his mother; stepfather; his in-laws, W. Elwood and Helen Abernatha; his brother, Pastor John D. Norton and wife, Gloria; and brother, Herbert C. Norton.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 8, 2022, at Pine Street United Methodist Church, 441 Pine Street, Williamsport, PA 17701 with Rev. Dr. John Piper officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

Memorials can be sent to a non-profit of your choice. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
