William G. Mathers, 91, of Montoursville, formerly of Easton, transitioned to be with his Lord on July 4, 2021 at The Gatehouse Hospice.
Born on November 23, 1929 in Falls Township, Wyoming County, he was the son of Clyde S. and Beula I. (Hendershot) Mathers.
Attending Penn State University, William earned a degree in agricultural engineering and lettered as the starting right guard for Rip Engle’s 1949-1950 football team playing in two Blue/Gray All Star games. After serving as an officer in the US Navy he had a successful career with Dresser-Rand Co. as a mechanical engineer He remained an avid Penn State fan throughout his life.
Most important he was a man of faith devoted to his family. He was a humble, gracious man always concerned with the needs of others. His words were few, his heart large and his smile warm.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lois Pickett.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Faye L. Skelly; sons David G. (Sally) Mathers of Great Falls, MT, and Daniel K. (Dottie) Mathers of Montoursville; daughter Debra L. (Stan) Moczulski of Lancaster, SC; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and one on the way.
A funeral service will be on Friday, July 9, 2021, 11:00 a.m., at Faith United Methodist Church, 700 Fairview Dr., Montoursville with Rev. Dr. Joseph Shimko officiating.
Burial will follow in Montoursville Cemetery.
There will be a viewing from 10-11:00 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church.
